“’Sup Boss?” asked Aiden. He was always one to try and remove the tension from a situation and my typical reply, obviously given that I can never help being a smartarse, came out before I could stop myself.

“The roof, the sky, some clouds and eventually you get to outer space. Beyond that, you’d have to ask NASA… or the aliens; rumour is that’s where they hail from.” I smiled when I said it and instantly relaxed. Whatever happened now, I knew I would be okay.

“Okay guys,” I began with the serious stuff. I was about to flick my radio to open mic but realised everyone was here. The sentries were standing in the doorway of the church. “You all heard what Brock told us when he got here. Sounds to me like destroying this Queen – or whatever she is – might be a big step in getting rid of these things, but who knows. I don’t even know if it’s going to be possible to get there, or if I’m right about it being a hive, but I’ve decided that I am going to go and try to check it out, try to kill this Queen.”

“When do we leave?” Cam asked me.

“We?” I asked her.

“Yeah, we…” added Daniel and Delta at the same time. Delta continued, “You really think we’re going to let you go without us? We’re a team!” He smiled as he said it.

“I’m not going to ask anyone to come with me, let’s be honest, from everything we’ve heard and guessed this is going to be very difficult, maybe impossible, but I want to give it a try. They already think we are dead, so I don’t think they will care. I was going to leave now but I think sunset might be better, cover of darkness and all that. No point in waiting any longer than that. It’ll give you all a chance to think it through. Now I am going to go and get some proper sleep before I go.” I left so much unsaid, but I figured they would all make their own decisions. Much as I didn’t want to be responsible for risking anyone else’s lives with my crazy mission, it was nice to know at least some of them were thinking they wanted to come with me. I hoped they would think it through properly before they tagged along.

I slept for a few hours and woke to the smell of cooking. I wandered back up the ladder, unable to ignore the smell and go back to sleep. I found everyone sitting in front of the door to the church, enjoying the afternoon sun. They all looked refreshed and relaxed, not at all like people who were about to undertake a dangerous and difficult mission… so maybe they had all decided to stay behind after all.

Brock got up when he saw me and walked over to me with a big bowl of something that looked like stew. He handed it to me.
